Music Center Spotlight 2027 Application Deadline: October 16 Guide

Spotlight 2027 applications are due October 16, 2026. Here is what Southern California high school performers need to know about eligibility, audition videos, awards and the calendar.

The Music Center Spotlight 2027 application deadline has been extended to October 16, 2026. Southern California high school performers have a short remaining window to submit for the free competition and artistic development program. For students weighing an application, the immediate priorities are checking eligibility, completing the correct audition requirements and submitting the video along with the form.

Music Center Spotlight 2027 application deadline: what to submit

The Music Center’s official FAQ says an online application and video audition are required, with no application fee. Starting the form does not finish the process: a saved application without a submitted video will not be considered. Students applying in multiple categories need the required submission for each.

There is a date inconsistency worth flagging. The FAQ’s opening answer confirms the October 16 extension, but a later video answer still mentions October 12. The program’s current calendar and eligibility page both confirm October 16, 2026. Applicants should follow that updated deadline and check the official pages for any further instructions.

The FAQ also says there are no application limits in any category this year. U.S. citizenship is not required: permanent residents and international students studying in the United States may apply if they satisfy the program’s other eligibility requirements. That distinction can matter for families deciding whether to begin an application.

Who qualifies for these performing arts scholarships?

The eligibility rules cover students attending public, private, online or home schools whose home base is in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino or Imperial County. Applicants must be enrolled in high school as of December 31, 2026, and cannot be full-time college students. Ballet and Dance applicants should check their category rules for residency exceptions.

The seven categories are Acting, Ballet, Dance, Classical Voice, Non-Classical Voice, Classical Instrumental and Contemporary Instrumental. Students may enter more than one, but can reach the finals in only one category. Previous Grand Prize Finalists cannot reapply.

Audition videos must have been recorded between November 2025 and October 2026. Read the linked category instructions before selecting material or uploading a recording; requirements should be checked for the specific discipline.

What students can receive beyond an award

According to the program overview, Spotlight combines scholarships with written feedback, coaching, college and career preparation, mastery classes and online Spotlight Academy resources. Students of all skill levels are encouraged to apply. Its value extends to practicing the preparation and audition habits that performers need when approaching future opportunities.

The published award structure lists $5,000 for each Grand Prize Finalist, $1,000 for Honorable Mentions, $500 for Semifinalists and $100 for Merit Awards. Fourteen Grand Prize Finalists are selected, two per category. These are competitive awards, not payments guaranteed to every applicant.

Preliminary 1 uses video submissions; Preliminary 2 and semifinal rounds involve live auditions. That progression makes the application the beginning of a longer development process rather than a single performance submission.

Check the calendar before committing

The Spotlight 2027 calendar places instrumental Preliminary 2 auditions in December 2026, with other listed categories following in January 2027. Semifinal auditions are scheduled across February and March. The finale rehearsal is May 21, followed by the Grand Finale on May 22 at the Ahmanson Theatre. Dates remain subject to change.

Families should review those commitments now. Grand Prize Finalists must fully participate in required rehearsals, performances and associated activities to receive their scholarship.
