Sundance 2027 Filmmaker Fellowship Deadlines: Fall Application Guide
Compare Sundance’s current fellowship and grant deadlines, eligibility rules and upcoming application openings before planning your next submission.
Sundance 2027 filmmaker fellowship deadlines are coming into focus this fall, with the Merata Mita Fellowship application opening October 13, 2026. For independent creators, the useful question is not simply which program offers money, but which opportunity matches their background, format and stage of work.
Here is a source-checked guide to current and upcoming applications. These are artist-development opportunities, not shortcuts to festival selection or guarantees that a film will be financed.
Sundance 2027 filmmaker fellowship deadlines: what is open
The Merata Mita Fellowship closes November 3, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. It is open to U.S.-based and international Indigenous artists who identify as women and are working toward directing a feature film. There is no application fee.
Selected fellows receive cash grants and a year of support that includes mentorship, access to Sundance artist-program services and a festival trip. The public listing does not state a grant amount, so applicants should not assume it matches another fellowship’s award. Notifications are scheduled for early December.
The program honors Merata Mita, who served as an advisor and artistic director of Sundance’s Native Filmmakers Lab from 2000 to 2009. Its purpose connects financial assistance with a longer relationship to creative development.
Graton Fellowship: a distinct California tribal opportunity
The 2027 Graton Fellowship has a November 16 deadline, also at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. Two selected artists will each receive $25,000 and yearlong support, including mentorship and access to strategic and creative services. Applying is free.
This opportunity is for artists from California-based tribes, including federally and nonfederally recognized tribes. It is not a general grant for everyone who lives in California. Sundance’s Indigenous Program page explains the affiliation documentation and the option of working with a Graton Tribal Representative to gather paperwork. Check those instructions before investing time in a submission.
The application page places selection notifications in late December, with the precise timing still to be determined. Keep that uncertainty in mind when planning a project’s cash flow or production commitments.
Science-centered series have a separate grant route
Sundance’s Artist Opportunities page lists the 2027 Episodic Alfred P. Sloan Grant with a December 3, 2026 deadline. It provides a $17,000 monetary grant and creative support for a writer or two-person writing team developing an original half-hour or hour-long series.
The series must place positive emphasis on a historical figure, event or current area of science. Sundance names fields including medicine, energy, mechanics, technology, mathematics and invention. General Episodic Lab applications are closed, but qualifying Sloan projects have this separate application route. Follow the official page’s application instructions and waiver-code guidance.
Put November openings on the calendar
The same official calendar says the 2027 Ignite x Adobe Fellowship opens November 12. It is for emerging filmmakers ages 18–25 and involves submitting a short film for consideration. The 2027 Producers Track opens November 17, with separate applications for fiction and nonfiction producers developing feature projects.
Those opening dates are not submission deadlines. Read the full application when it becomes available rather than recycling an older cycle’s requirements. A program’s age range, format or submission process can determine fit before artistic merit is considered.
Prepare carefully without inventing requirements
As practical editorial advice, build a simple application calendar, keep working links to your samples and leave time to resolve eligibility questions. Use each program’s actual checklist; do not assume every fellowship wants the same screenplay, budget or portfolio. Contact Sundance’s listed program staff when a requirement is unclear.
For another verified opportunity with different criteria, see Hollywood Weekly’s Film Independent $100,000 Short Film Program guide. Matching the right project to the right support is more productive than sending an identical application everywhere.
