Who Is Marvel’s New Black Panther? Everything to Know About David Jonsson
The acclaimed British actor will portray the adult son of T’Challa in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3.
Marvel Studios has found the next actor to wear the Black Panther suit.
During Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, director Ryan Coogler introduced British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther. Jonsson will portray the adult son of the late King T’Challa, taking one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most important franchises into a new generation.

Which T’Challa will David Jonsson play?
Jonsson is not replacing Chadwick Boseman as the original King T’Challa. Instead, he will portray T’Challa’s son and namesake, first introduced as a child at the end of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In that film’s emotional mid-credits scene, Nakia revealed to Shuri that she and T’Challa had a son named Toussaint. The child then explained that his Wakandan name was Prince T’Challa, establishing a possible future for the royal family and the Black Panther legacy.
Black Panther 3 will advance that storyline by presenting Jonsson as the grown-up T’Challa. The decision allows Marvel to honor Boseman’s portrayal while continuing the character’s family legacy.
Exactly how much time will have passed within the MCU has not been explained. Marvel has also not revealed how the younger T’Challa becomes an adult or what circumstances lead him to assume the Black Panther mantle.
Who is David Jonsson?
David Jonsson is a British actor who has quietly built one of the most impressive résumés among Hollywood’s rising stars.
Born and raised in East London, Jonsson trained with the National Youth Theatre before earning a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His early career included appearances on the London stage, including productions of Mary Stuart and Don Juan in Soho.
Television viewers may recognize him as Gus Sackey from the HBO and BBC financial drama Industry. The role helped introduce Jonsson to an international audience and demonstrated his ability to portray an ambitious, intelligent and emotionally complicated character.
His breakout film performance came opposite Vivian Oparah in the acclaimed 2023 romantic comedy Rye Lane. As Dom, a young man recovering from a painful breakup, Jonsson displayed a warmth and vulnerability that helped turn the modestly budgeted British film into a critical favorite.
He then reached a much larger audience as Andy, the compassionate synthetic in Alien: Romulus. Jonsson’s performance required him to shift between innocence, loyalty and unsettling machine-like control, giving him one of the movie’s most memorable roles.
His work in Alien: Romulus helped earn him the 2025 BAFTA Rising Star Award. His other credits include Murder Is Easy, The Long Walk and the prison drama Wasteman.
Why David Jonsson makes sense for Black Panther
The Black Panther role requires much more than physical presence. The actor must convincingly represent royalty, intelligence, emotional strength, cultural responsibility and the burden of carrying a powerful legacy.
Jonsson’s previous performances suggest that he can handle those competing demands. Rye Lane demonstrated his emotional openness, Industry displayed his confidence and sophistication, and Alien: Romulus proved that he can command the screen in a major science-fiction production.
He is also joining the MCU at a significant point in his career. Jonsson is already respected by critics and filmmakers, but he has not yet become so closely associated with another blockbuster character that audiences cannot accept him as T’Challa.

What happens to Shuri?
Letitia Wright’s Shuri became the Black Panther in Wakanda Forever after recreating the heart-shaped herb and confronting Namor. Jonsson’s casting does not necessarily mean Shuri’s time as a hero is over.
Wright appeared alongside Jonsson, Ryan Coogler and Winston Duke during the Comic-Con announcement, indicating that Shuri and M’Baku will remain important parts of the franchise. The third movie could therefore explore how Shuri guides her nephew, how Wakanda responds to an adult heir and whether the Black Panther title can be shared or transferred.
Marvel has not confirmed the complete story, so any conflict between Shuri and the younger T’Challa remains speculation.
Is David Jonsson replacing Chadwick Boseman?
No actor can truly replace what Chadwick Boseman brought to Black Panther.
Boseman’s performance helped turn T’Challa into a global symbol of dignity, leadership and African excellence. His death from colon cancer in 2020 changed the direction of the franchise and left Marvel with the difficult responsibility of continuing the story without diminishing his legacy.
By casting Jonsson as T’Challa’s son rather than presenting him as a rewritten version of Boseman’s character, Marvel is choosing continuation instead of erasure. The younger T’Challa carries his father’s name, history and expectations, but he can still develop into a distinct hero.
That distinction will be crucial to how audiences receive him.
