When Does Shark Week Start and Where Can You Stream It?

Discovery’s annual television event returns with seven nights of shark encounters, scientific investigations and 20 new specials.

Shark Week 2026 begins Sunday, July 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel. The event continues every night through Saturday, August 1.

This year marks the 38th installment of Discovery’s popular summer tradition. The 2026 schedule includes 20 new specials combining underwater photography, new research, daring expeditions and encounters with some of the ocean’s most fascinating predators.

Viewers can watch Shark Week on the Discovery Channel or stream its programming on HBO Max. The official HBO Max Shark Week collection includes new programming and selections from previous years.

What time does Shark Week begin?

New Shark Week programming begins at 8 p.m. ET/PT each night. Most evenings feature three hour-long premieres shown consecutively at 8, 9 and 10 p.m.

The opening-night schedule begins with K-Pop Shark Heroes, featuring actor and comedian Ken Jeong and singer Rei Ami. The special examines shark encounters near the Korean Peninsula and uses the international popularity of Korean entertainment to help challenge misconceptions about sharks.

Opening night continues with Air Jaws: Red, White and Breach, the latest entry in the long-running Air Jaws series, followed by Invasion of the Mega Sharks.

Discovery will also show previously released Shark Week programs during the daytime, giving longtime fans an opportunity to revisit memorable expeditions before the nightly premieres begin.

Where can you stream Shark Week 2026?

The simplest streaming option in the United States is HBO Max. A subscription is required, and the precise availability of individual programs can depend upon a viewer’s location and subscription plan.

Cord-cutters can also watch the live Discovery Channel through television-streaming services that carry the network. Depending on the package and location, those options may include:

  • YouTube TV
  • Hulu + Live TV
  • DirecTV Stream
  • Sling TV
  • Philo

Because channel lineups and prices can change, viewers should confirm that Discovery is included before subscribing.

Anyone who already receives Discovery through a cable or satellite television provider can watch the nightly premieres directly on the channel. The official Discovery Shark Week page provides schedule information, previews and additional shark-related features.

What is included in the 2026 lineup?

Shark Week 2026 travels to locations around the world to examine unusual shark behavior, improve scientific understanding and document rarely seen species.

Among this year’s featured programs are:

  • K-Pop Shark Heroes
  • Air Jaws: Red, White and Breach
  • Invasion of the Mega Sharks
  • Bull Shark Dinner Bell
  • Jurassic Sharks
  • Jaws vs. Orca
  • Alien Sharks: Untamed America
  • Ultimate Shark Dive
  • Great White Highway
  • Thresher Shark: Stun to Kill

The programs explore subjects ranging from great-white intelligence and shark migration to feeding behavior, conservation and new underwater filming technology.

Some specials are built around spectacular close encounters, while others examine questions scientists are still working to answer. Researchers use drones, underwater cameras, tagging equipment and other technology to study animals that can be difficult—and sometimes dangerous—to observe.

What makes Shark Week so popular?

Shark Week debuted on Discovery in 1988 and has grown into one of cable television’s most recognizable annual events.

Part of its appeal comes from the extraordinary footage. Great whites breaching above the water, divers entering shark habitats and researchers encountering rarely documented species provide the kind of images that naturally attract attention.

However, Shark Week is also an opportunity to teach viewers that sharks are more complex than their popular image suggests. Although the programs frequently emphasize suspense, the scientists and conservationists appearing in them can help audiences understand the importance of sharks to healthy marine ecosystems.

As apex predators, many shark species help maintain balance within ocean food chains. Declining shark populations can consequently affect many other forms of marine life.

The strongest Shark Week programs combine adventure with that larger educational purpose.

Can you watch previous Shark Week specials?

Yes. HBO Max maintains a collection of programs from earlier Shark Week events, although the exact catalog can change.

That archive allows viewers to revisit popular specials and learn more about particular species, including great whites, tiger sharks, hammerheads, makos and bull sharks. Discovery’s website also offers clips, photographs, facts and previews connected to the event.

When does Shark Week 2026 end?

The final night is Saturday, August 1. The closing lineup includes Great White Highway and Thresher Shark: Stun to Kill, which examines how thresher sharks use their remarkably long tails while hunting.

For audiences who cannot watch each premiere live, streaming makes it easier to catch up throughout the week.

Whether viewers come for the breathtaking footage, dramatic expeditions or marine science, Shark Week remains one of television’s defining summer events.

Shark Week 2026 airs July 26 through August 1 on Discovery and streams on HBO Max.
