Is Ryan Gosling Officially Playing Ghost Rider?

After years of fan speculation, Marvel Studios has confirmed that Ryan Gosling will enter the MCU as the supernatural motorcycle-riding hero.

Yes, Ryan Gosling is officially playing Ghost Rider.

Marvel Studios confirmed the casting during its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026. Gosling will lead a new standalone Ghost Rider movie directed by Shawn Levy, the filmmaker behind Deadpool & Wolverine.

The movie is being developed for a theatrical release in 2028, although Marvel has not announced its precise release date. The studio confirmed the project through its official Marvel website.

Which Ghost Rider will Ryan Gosling play?

Gosling will portray Johnny Blaze, the best-known incarnation of Ghost Rider.

In Marvel’s mythology, Blaze is a motorcycle stunt performer who makes a supernatural bargain to protect someone he loves. The agreement connects him to a demonic Spirit of Vengeance, transforming him into Ghost Rider.

When the transformation occurs, Blaze traditionally appears with a flaming skull, supernatural strength and the ability to control hellfire. His motorcycle also becomes a powerful supernatural vehicle capable of traveling across extraordinary terrain.

Ghost Rider is not a conventional superhero. He exists in the darker, supernatural corner of Marvel’s universe, where horror, fantasy, revenge and moral judgment often overlap.

Why was Ryan Gosling selected?

Gosling has publicly expressed interest in playing Ghost Rider for several years. What initially seemed like fan casting gradually developed into serious conversations with Marvel Studios.

The casting makes sense for an actor who has moved comfortably between independent dramas and large-scale Hollywood productions. Gosling has demonstrated action credentials in movies including Drive, The Gray Man and The Fall Guy, while films such as Blade Runner 2049 showed his ability to carry a visually ambitious, emotionally restrained science-fiction story.

Ghost Rider would allow him to combine those qualities: physical action, dark humor, emotional conflict and the lonely personality of a man struggling to control a destructive supernatural force.

The project will also mark Gosling’s first leading role in a traditional superhero franchise.

Who is directing the new Ghost Rider movie?

Shawn Levy will direct the film.

Levy previously directed Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine and is also working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter. Their established working relationship could help the new film balance Gosling’s dramatic style with the spectacle and humor audiences expect from a Marvel production.

Marvel has not announced the screenwriter, supporting cast or production start date.

It is also unknown whether the movie will be a completely self-contained origin story or immediately connect Ghost Rider to other MCU characters.

Has Ryan Gosling appeared in a Marvel movie before?

No. Ghost Rider will be Gosling’s first confirmed role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

His casting comes as Marvel brings several prominent performers into major new roles. During the same Comic-Con presentation, the studio introduced David Jonsson as the next Black Panther and continued promoting Robert Downey Jr.’s transformation into Doctor Doom for Avengers: Doomsday.

Adding Gosling gives Marvel another internationally recognized actor capable of attracting audiences who may not already follow every MCU production.

Who played Ghost Rider before Ryan Gosling?

Nicolas Cage portrayed Johnny Blaze in two theatrical movies produced before the character officially joined the MCU.

The first Ghost Rider was released in 2007. Cage returned for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2012. Although both movies received mixed critical responses, Cage’s intense performance developed a loyal following.

Gosling also has a personal connection to the first movie: his longtime partner, Eva Mendes, played Johnny Blaze’s former girlfriend Roxanne Simpson opposite Cage.

A different Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, was later portrayed by Gabriel Luna on the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Reyes drove a supernatural muscle car rather than Johnny Blaze’s signature motorcycle.

Marvel has not disclosed whether Cage or Luna will appear in the new film. Any claims about their involvement should currently be treated as speculation.

Will this Ghost Rider be part of the MCU?

Yes. Unlike the two Nicolas Cage films, the upcoming movie is being produced by Marvel Studios as part of its expanding cinematic universe.

That creates numerous possibilities. Ghost Rider could eventually interact with characters associated with Marvel’s supernatural stories, including Doctor Strange, Blade, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night or members of the Midnight Sons.

However, Marvel has not officially announced a Midnight Sons movie or confirmed any of those characters for Gosling’s film.

The studio could introduce Ghost Rider through his own self-contained story before connecting him to the larger universe.

What powers does Ghost Rider have?

Ghost Rider’s abilities vary between stories, but his most recognizable powers traditionally include:

  • Superhuman strength and durability
  • Control over supernatural hellfire
  • A magically transformed motorcycle
  • The ability to travel across unusual surfaces and dimensions
  • Regeneration from severe injuries
  • The Penance Stare

The Penance Stare forces its victim to experience the pain and suffering that person has caused others. It is one of Marvel’s most distinctive—and frightening—supernatural powers.

How Marvel Studios will visualize these abilities has not been revealed.

Will the movie be horror or traditional superhero action?

That remains one of the project’s biggest unanswered questions.

Ghost Rider naturally lends itself to horror. His stories involve demons, curses, corrupted souls and supernatural punishment. At the same time, the character’s flaming appearance and high-speed motorcycle action can support a major blockbuster.

Shawn Levy’s involvement suggests the movie may combine supernatural spectacle with humor and character-driven action. However, Marvel has not announced its intended rating or tone.

A darker approach could help Ghost Rider stand apart from Marvel’s more colorful heroes and give the MCU an opportunity to explore its supernatural world more fully.

When will Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider movie be released?

Marvel plans to release Ghost Rider in 2028, but no exact date has been announced. Both Reuters and the Associated Press reported the casting following Marvel’s Comic-Con presentation.

A trailer, complete cast and official plot description are not yet available.

For now, the central question has finally been answered: Ryan Gosling is officially Marvel’s new Ghost Rider, and the Spirit of Vengeance is preparing to ride into the MCU.
